  • I'm a wheelchair user, are you able to undertake more specialist disabled adaptations?

Absolutely. The Ruby Slippers design philosophy fundamentally embraces the principles of accessible design. As with all our projects, we aim to deliver 'beautifully functional' solutions designed around you and your wants. We'll help you avoid your home looking like an institution - the end result we've sadly observed too many times with many disabled adaptations.

At Ruby Slippers we believe that we can deliver tailored functionality whilst capturing your unique sense of style. Our design approach blends well specified mainstream products with specialist equipment and products. And obviously we'd be delighted to work alongside any Occupational Therapist, or other Healthcare Specialist that you might have. Please give us a call.

  • Are there government grants available?

A Home Improvement Grant may be available for some home adaptations depending on your condition. There is a process to be followed and this starts with an assessment of needs by your local council's social care services - usually undertaken by an occupational therapist. Visit your local council's website or the Scottish Government's website for more information. Alternatively we'll happily help you find the right person to talk to at your local council's social care services.

  • Are any of your supplies eligible for 'zero-rating' VAT relief?

Certain alterations made to a chronically sick or disabled person's private home can be VAT zero-rated. Such as building a ramp; widening a doorway or passageway; necessary adaptations to a bathroom, washroom or lavatory; essential work to install a through-floor lift; and the supply and installation of a stairlift.

In addition there are certain goods designed for disabled people that can qualify for zero-rating if they're supplied for a chronically sick or disabled person's personal or domestic use.

If you are eligible you will need to complete a written declaration form for us - we have a standard form that you can use. Please note you won't qualify if you are elderly but otherwise able-bodied or if you're only temporarily disabled or incapacitated.

Alternatively, if you're over 60, then you may not have to pay the full standard rate of VAT if you get certain mobility aids supplied and installed in your home. Instead you'll pay a 'reduced rate', currently 5%. The eligible mobility aids are grab rails, ramps, stairlifts, bath-lifts, built-in shower seats (or showers containing built-in shower seats) and walk-in baths with sealable doors. It doesn't apply to general home alterations or adaptations. You'll just need to give us a simple written declaration confirming that you are aged 60 or over.

You should visit the HMRC website's 'all topics for individuals' section for full accurate information or call their 'VAT reliefs for disabled people' helpline on 0845 302 0203.

  • What is a through-floor lift?

It is basically a simple platform lift that travels up through the ceiling in your home to give you easy access to your upstairs level. They are primarily designed for wheelchair users - however individuals with mobility problems but who are not in a wheelchair may still use this lift as some are smaller with built-in seats, and therefore a potential alternative to a stairlift. It can be mounted on a load-bearing wall, installed in a shaft or operate completely free-standing - only taking up a modest amount of floor space. Ruby Slippers works with all three of the leading manufacturers in the UK and would be delighted to talk you through the various products to help you decide which might be best for you.
